A Writer’s Life is Sometimes Magical

Generally, I am optimistic by nature. However this past year has been more than usually challenging. Some medical setbacks reminding me that I am one more person who is getting older. This week I’ve been having a dialogue with my self, asking questions as “I’ve written 8 books. Why should I write another book?” I enjoy the writing yet not the business part that follows – especially PR for the book, etc. This has put me in a surly mood the past days.

I had decided to go to a film at our local theatre and I would be going alone, as my friends were all busy doing something else. First, I went to the club to swim laps – my favorite and only exercise – then rushed to the theatre, arriving 5 minutes before showtime. As I approached the door to the theatre, an attractive man in his 50s was just in front of me. He stopped and opened the door for me to go in first. As I entered the theatre, he said you’re a writer? “Yes.” What’s your first name? “Catherine”.

Catherine Ann Jones, right? I have your book in my sachel, and he patted the stachel under his arm. “Which book. I’ve written 8.” He replied, “The Way of Story. Actually,I’m reading it for the third time and it’s a great inspiration.”

As we were each on our own, we decided to sit together and hurried in as it was soon to start. In the couple of minutes before the film began, he began to tell me his story. A pleasant experience and a synchronicity well timed.

Writing is a solitary act and sometimes you can wonder why you’re doing it again and again. I was having doubts after writing for so long and so many plays, films, and books that it might be time to call it a day. And then something unexpected – even magical – happens ,and a stranger recognizes you and tells you he’s reading The Way of Story (my first book) for the third time and how it inspires him. And the clouds roll away and you know in an instant that it is all worth while.
